Who is Natural Gas Conversion Resources?
Natural Gas Conversion Resources is a member of the Hearthstone Utilities, Inc. family of companies. Hearthstone owns utilities that distribute natural gas in five states to approximately 79,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers.
Why should I consider converting my home’s energy source to natural gas?
Natural gas is the fuel of choice for space heating and other uses for approximately 50% of American homes. Natural gas is clean, efficient, and safe, and provides a substantial cost savings when compared to fuel oil or propane. In addition, homes with natural gas have a 4% higher resale value than those with fuel oil or propane – according to the National Association of Home Builders. Finally, natural gas equipment requires much less maintenance than fuel oil, which will also save you money. These factors make it economical to invest in your home and convert to natural gas.
Who is eligible to participate in this program?
Homeowners in the central Maine communities of Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Hermon, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, Bucksport and Lincoln with natural gas main already on their street are candidates for the natural gas conversion financing program.
What is the conversion process?
Natural Gas Conversion Resources will have a project manager review your specific needs, payment options and documentation to initiate natural gas service. The homeowner selects three contractors from a certified list to do on-site assessments. Once the assessments are completed, formal bids are prepared and sent to the homeowner and the project manager. The homeowner reviews the bids and may consult with the project manager prior to the homeowner’s selection of winning contractor’s bid. The selected contractor will take care of ordering any parts, appliances and coordinate the conversion. The local natural gas utility will run a service to the home and the new fuel lines are hooked up. A final inspection is completed and the natural gas line is activated.
What is the average conversion cost?
Depending on the specific scope of the conversion, the cost could range from $1,000 to $10,000. Please contact a project manager at 1-888-205-0756 and schedule an appointment to determine the scope and cost of your project.
How can I pay for my natural gas conversion?
Homeowners have many payment alternatives. Naturally, cash or credit card payments may be made directly to your contractor. In addition, homeowners may take advantage of several financing options. Borrowers with a minimum FICO score of 685 (which is approximately the average Mainer FICO score) could be eligible for a 4.9% APR for a term of five to 10 years. Borrowers who do not meet the 685 FICO score threshold may still qualify for other financing products with reasonable monthly payments. Loan amounts are limited to $10,000. If projects exceed $10,000, the homeowner would need to pay any amount above $10,000 directly to the contractor in the form of cash or with a credit card payment.
What is the timeline for this process?
Generally speaking, the conversion process will take roughly two to four weeks once the local natural gas utility places a meter at your home. Please note that a natural gas service application is submitted to the local gas distribution company at the start of the project, and the utility hookup is dependent on their workload and scheduling process. The project manager will provide you with updates during the conversion process and coordinate the schedule with you. While there is some flexibility in the scheduling, we strive to keep the conversion process moving as quickly and efficiently as possible.
In addition to the heating system, what other appliances can be converted to natural gas?
In addition to the heating system, natural gas can be piped for a water heater, clothes dryer, cooking stove/oven, fireplace, outdoor grill and even a pool heater.
How does Natural Gas Conversion Resources screen and certify contractors?
The company screens contractors through Better Business Bureau reports and requires the contractor to have certain State licenses and accreditations, and insurance levels. In addition to reviewing the contractor’s experience and customer relations activities, the company also requires the contractor sign a Code of Conduct Agreement and agree to a number of terms and conditions to participate in the program. If a contractor, for any reason, fails to adhere to the standards of the program, their participation will be terminated.
What if there is a problem during the conversion process?
If a problem occurs during the conversion process, the project manager will work with the contractor to make every effort to rectify the problem as soon as possible. We look forward to leveraging our experience and relationships in the industry and meeting your individual needs.
Will my monthly energy bill go down following the conversion to natural gas?
During the months of the winter heating season – typically October to April – your energy bills should be less than your monthly bills heating with propane or fuel oil. Although commodity prices fluctuate, based on the usage of 700 gallons of fuel oil in the 2018-2019 heating season, you would have saved approximately $600.
